RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Mount Sinabung in Karo Regency, North Sumatra, experienced a major eruption on Monday morning, August 31, 2026, ejecting a thick black column of volcanic ash approximately 3,500 meters into the atmosphere above its summit.

According to the Geological Agency of the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources (ESDM), the eruption commenced at 10:17 AM WIB and was recorded on seismograms with a maximum amplitude of 120 mm and a duration exceeding one hour. The ash plume drifted primarily toward the east and southeast.

Mount Sinabung remains at Level II. Authorities have established a exclusion zone prohibiting all public and tourist activities within a three-kilometer radius of the peak, extending to 4.5 kilometers for the south-southeast sector, while warning residents along river basins to remain vigilant against cold lava flows (lahar).

Geological authorities and disaster mitigation officials emphasized strict adherence to safety exclusion zones and continuous inter-agency monitoring to protect local populations.

Head of the Geological Agency at the Ministry of ESDM Lana Saria provided technical details on the seismic event and outlined immediate safety directives.

"The eruption was recorded starting at 10:17 AM WIB with a maximum amplitude of 120 mm and a duration of approximately one hour and one minute, we urge residents and tourists to avoid relocated villages, strictly respect the three-kilometer safety radius, and remain cautious of potential cold lava flows along rivers originating from Mount Sinabung's slopes," Lana Saria said in Jakarta on Monday, August 31, 2026, as quoted by Antara. ***
