Sumedang Celebrate Independence Day with Ngagogo Lauk Fish-Catching Event

RRI.CO.ID, Sumedang - Residents flocked to the pond at Al-Kamil Mosque in the Sumedang Administration Center (PPS), West Java on Monday, August 17, 2026, to take part in the traditional ngagogo lauk fish-catching event to celebrate Indonesia’s 81st Independence Anniversary. The activity attracted considerable public attention after the organizers released 1.5 tons of fish into the pond.

People from all walks of life entered the pond and tried to catch fish with their bare hands. The excitement grew as the organizers released 20 fish marked with special ribbons. Anyone who caught a ribbon-marked fish was entitled to a cash prize of IDR 100,000 (USD 6.25).

Sumedang Deputy Regent, M. Fajar Aldila, invited residents to enjoy the festivities while maintaining safety and order. “Pray for our beloved Sumedang to be spared from disasters. May its officials remain trustworthy and be kept away from misconduct, corruption, collusion, and nepotism. Most importantly, may its residents always be happy,” he said on Monday.

In addition to competing to catch fish, residents were further energized by cash prizes thrown by the organizers in plastic cups. Fajar reminded residents to remain cautious and pay attention to their surroundings while taking part in the event.

The ngagogo lauk tradition is one of the ways Sumedang residents celebrate independence with joy. The activity not only provided entertainment but also strengthened togetherness and social ties among residents.
