West Sumatra Seeks South Korean Investment in Clean Energy

RRI.CO.ID, Padang - The West Sumatra Provincial Administration is actively exploring investment opportunities with a South Korean consortium focused on waste management, renewable energy development, resource circulation, and greenhouse gas emission reduction. A primary focal point of this initiative includes harnessing methane gas from the Koto Tangah Final Processing Site (TPA) in Padang City to simultaneously curb emissions and generate power.

This collaborative exploration was officially marked by the submission of a Letter of Intent (LOI) by three South Korean partners, THE Energy Consulting Co., Ltd., SSKK Solution Co., Ltd., and the Korea Agriculture and Fisheries and Industry Recycling Cooperative, during a meeting at the Gubernatorial Palace Meeting Room on Tuesday, August 11, 2026.

West Sumatra Governor Mahyeldi Ansharullah warmly welcomed the consortium’s interest, noting that the proposed partnership aligns with the provincial government's commitment to advancing sustainable development while generating new economic value for local communities.

“Waste management and renewable energy development are crucial parts of our efforts to build the region through an environmentally friendly and sustainable concept while providing economic benefits for the community,” he said, as quoted by Infopublik.id.

Mahyeldi emphasized that the provincial administration is fully prepared to facilitate follow-up discussions with regency and city administrations as well as relevant regional agencies. He expressed hope that the initiative will go beyond resolving waste challenges by driving technology transfer, enhancing human resource capacity, and creating local jobs.

“Therefore, we will facilitate further discussions with local governments and related parties. We hope this cooperation will ultimately provide wide-ranging benefits, both from environmental and economic perspectives,” he added.

To ensure swift implementation, Mahyeldi has assigned the One-Stop Integrated Investment and Licensing Services Office (DPMPTSP) alongside the Provincial Environmental Service (DLH) to steer communication and technical talks between the South Korean consortium and relevant regional authorities.

Shin Chang-eun, Chairman of the Korea Agriculture and Fisheries and Industry Recycling Cooperative, an organization representing 62 associations and roughly 18,000 recycling companies in South Korea, noted that the region holds immense potential for emission-reduction projects driven by modern recycling technology.

According to Shin, the consortium is particularly drawn to harnessing landfill gas at the Koto Tangah TPA in Padang City. Methane gas captured from decomposing waste can be repurposed to mitigate greenhouse gas emissions while serving as a viable energy source. Furthermore, municipal waste holds strong potential for conversion into Solid Recovered Fuel (SRF), an alternative fuel derived from processed waste materials.

“We are interested in projects focusing on greenhouse gas reduction, resource circulation, recycling, and the application of cutting-edge technologies from Korea. That potential exists in West Sumatra,” Shin expressed.

He added that the cooperative looks forward to immediate technical follow-ups with the Padang City Administration and key stakeholders to evaluate the project's parameters and foundational design concepts.

Submitting the LOI serves as an initial steppingstone toward concrete collaboration, potentially paving the way for a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in subsequent stages. The partnership is envisioned to bolster technological exchange and shared expertise between South Korea and Indonesia within the environmental sector.

“We hope the cooperation between West Sumatra and our association will continue and yield successful projects,” he concluded.

The West Sumatra Provincial Administration hopes this strategic investment exploration will accelerate green development across the region via modernized waste management, clean energy adoption, and sustainable economic growth. ***
