  • Simeulue has been designated as Aceh’s only national priority transmigration area under the Transmigrasi Selaut program.
  • The initiative will accelerate infrastructure development, strengthen local economies, and establish new integrated economic centers across three districts.

RRI.CO.ID, Banda Aceh - Simeulue Regency has been officially designated as part of the Transmigrasi Selaut region, securing a position among Indonesia’s 141 national priority transmigration zones and making it the only area in Aceh Province to receive the national status. The designated zone covers three districts on the island: Alafan, West Simeulue, and Salang.

As an outer island regency situated in the Indian Ocean, approximately 180 nautical miles off the western coast of Sumatra, Simeulue’s inclusion in the national priority list aims to accelerate infrastructure development and economic integration across its peripheral areas.

Under the national priority framework, the Ministry of Transmigration and local authorities will focus on upgrading basic infrastructure, including road networks and public utility facilities. Additionally, the program prioritizes local natural resource management, the development of regional flagship commodities, and targeted economic empowerment for resident communities across the three districts.

Local officials underscored that modern transmigration initiatives extend beyond demographic resettlement, functioning instead as strategic catalysts for new regional economic centers.

Head of the Simeulue Regency Transmigration and Manpower Agency, Firmanuddin, highlighted the significance of the designation for the archipelago's long-term growth.

"There are three districts in Simeulue Regency included in the Selaut Transmigration area, which is a national priority of the Ministry of Transmigration, this area is the sole national priority transmigration zone in Aceh Province" Firmanuddin said on Wednesday, July 29, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

Firmanuddin emphasized the broader economic vision behind the program's implementation. "The transmigration program is not merely about relocating populations to designated sites, but rather about building new integrated economic centers," he explained. ***
