Jakarta Registers 4,000 Bantargebang Waste Pickers for BPJS

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The Jakarta Provincial Administration has enrolled 4,000 waste pickers operating at the Bantargebang Integrated Waste Processing Site (TPST) into the Health Care and Social Security Agency (BPJS Ketenagakerjaan) social security program.
The social protection initiative represents a joint collaboration involving the Jakarta Provincial Administration, the Ministry of Environment, and the Ministry of Manpower.
With recent data estimating the total waste picker population in Bantargebang at approximately 6,000 individuals, city authorities have directed the Jakarta Environment Agency to identify and register the remaining 2,000 uninsured workers.
Under Government Regulation (PP) No. 50/2025, informal workers qualify for a 50 percent contribution discount for Work Accident Insurance (JKK) and Death Insurance (JKM), reducing monthly premium payments from IDR 16,800 (USD 0.95) to IDR 8,400 per person.
Administration executives emphasized that extending social security coverage to informal waste workers establishes an important precedent for municipal labor welfare across the country.
Jakarta Governor Pramono Anung Wibowo detailed the registration background and instructed relevant agencies to cover the remaining workforce.
"There are 4,000 waste pickers in Bantargebang whom we have registered, a program initiated back in 2017. I will ask the Environment Agency to collect data, especially concerning the waste pickers in Bantargebang, so we remain open to expanding coverage," Pramono said at the RDF Plant in Rorotan, North Jakarta, on Monday, August 10, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
Minister of Manpower Yassierli highlighted the specific insurance benefits and cost reductions available to informal workers.
"We appreciate the Jakarta Provincial Administration for providing protection to waste pickers in Bantargebang, which serves as an example for other regional governments to expand social security to informal workers," Minister Yassierli noted. ***
