RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - As the condition at Bantar Gebang Integrated Waste Processing Site (TPST) grows increasingly critical, the Central Jakarta Administration is racing to cut upstream waste volumes. Under Governor’s Instruction No. 5/2026, Central Jakarta now requires households to sort waste at the source to extend the lifespan of Jakarta’s sole final-processing facility.
“As already issued by the Governor in Instruction No. 5/2026, we have begun implementation. I hope Central Jakarta can achieve zero waste, for both organic and inorganic waste,” said Central Jakarta Mayor, Arifin, in Jakarta on Monday, 6 June 2026.
He said outreach has targeted not only households but also hotels, shopping centers, retail outlets, offices and the Central Jakarta Mayor’s Office complex. According to him, the main step is ensuring every household sorts waste at the source so the volume sent to TPST Bantar Gebang can be reduced.
Mayor Arifin acknowledged that implementation at the urban village level remains uneven. Some areas have reached about 30 percent compliance, while others are in the 11–20 percent range.
Nevertheless, the Central Jakarta Administration is accelerating the program to meet reduction targets. “We cannot delay. We must ensure waste sorting is actually done in every household as quickly as possible,” said the Mayor, as quoted by Antara.
As part of monitoring, officials place stickers on homes that have adopted sorting to distinguish them from those that have not. In addition to promoting sorting, the city is developing treatment for organic and inorganic waste so that not all refuse is taken to the final-processing site.
Mayor Arifin added the city targets continued growth in waste reduction through sorting and processing over the coming months. “We hope to reach 50 percent by August, at minimum, half must be handled.” ***
