RRI.CO.ID, Tidore - Infrastructure development and healthcare access across Indonesia’s archipelagic regions took center stage in Jakarta on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, as central authorities met with Tidore Kepulauan Mayor Administration to address medical disparities in remote municipalities.

The focus on island healthcare was highlighted during an audience between Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin and Tidore Kepulauan Mayor Muhammad Sinen at the Ministry of Health Headquarters. Joined by the acting head of the Tidore Health Agency and executive leadership from Tidore Regional Hospital (RSD), Mayor Sinen brought the specific infrastructure constraints of island communities directly to national policymakers.

In response, the Ministry of Health reaffirmed its commitment to upgrading island primary care by enforcing service standards that cap travel times to community health centers (puskesmas) at a maximum of two hours from the furthest outlying areas.

To support archipelagic healthcare delivery, the central government will equip approximately 10,000 puskesmas nationwide with ultrasound (USG) machines, dental tools, and laboratory equipment, while renovating 450 regional public hospitals (RSUD) and introducing additional financial incentives for doctors serving in outer regions.

They also emphasized that direct engagement is essential for closing the healthcare gap between major urban centers and archipelagic territories. Health Minister Budi Gunadi Sadikin outlined the broader national strategy to strengthen primary care facilities across all regions.

"We must improve healthcare quality by keeping the public healthy in the first place. Currently, 80 percent of the Health Ministry's budget is spent treating sick individuals," Minister Budi said in Jakarta on Wednesday, August 5, 2026, as quoted by Infopublik.id.

He added that the future challenge is ensuring people do not easily fall ill, over the next two to three years. The Health Ministry plans several major initiatives, such as upgrading medical equipment by equipping around 10,000 puskesmas across Indonesia with laboratory tools (blood and urine tests), USG machines, and dental care equipment.

Tidore Kepulauan Mayor Muhammad Sinen commended the central government's responsiveness to the needs of island municipalities. He said that whatever health challenges in the region will definitely receive attention from the Ministry of Health in the coming year.

"Regarding doctor allowances and income mentioned by the Health Minister, that will also be a priority, Alhamdulillah, we were able to meet directly with the Health Minister and his entire leadership. What we presented was warmly received by the Minister and his team, and hopefully, this will be a good beginning for Tidore moving forward," said Sinen. ***
