RRI.CO.ID, Surakarta - Surakarta Deputy Mayor Astrid Widayani has encouraged the development and preservation of Solo’s hand‑drawn batik through stronger trade promotion, including support from Trade Expo Indonesia.

The deputy minister noted that backing from the Ministry of Trade could help expand market access for cultural and handmade products from Solo, popular nickname of Surakarta.

Astrid delivered the remarks while accompanying Deputy Trade Minister Dyah Roro Esti on a visit to Kampung Batik Kauman on Friday, September 4, 2026. The delegation observed firsthand the artisans’ activities and the batik‑making process.

She emphasized that batik remains one of Solo’s flagship products to be promoted at trade exhibitions. Preserving hand‑drawn batik is a priority, she added, as it carries both cultural value and economic potential.

“Most of our focus is on batik, especially ensuring that hand‑drawn batik continues to be developed,” Astrid said.

Trade Expo Indonesia, she added, represents significant central government support for local administrations in showcasing their leading products. The event also provides opportunities for entrepreneurs to expand markets for local goods.

Astrid stressed that handmade and culturally rooted products from Solo must continue to be developed to enhance their appeal and added value, while ensuring the sustainability of regional cultural heritage.

Meanwhile, Deputy Trade Minister Dyah Roro Esti praised the batik production process she witnessed during the visit, saying that seeing artisans at work deepens appreciation for their craft.

“We observed the batik‑making process together with the artisans. Ultimately, we can better appreciate a product when we see how it is created,” Dyah said.

She added that the Ministry of Trade continues to facilitate entrepreneurs in connecting with international buyers, including through Trade Expo Indonesia, which serves as a platform for promotion and business matching. (Annalia Azzahra)
