Sleman Village Enterprise Boosts Premium Melon Cultivation on Idle Village Land

RRI.CO.ID, Sleman - The Village-owned enterprise of Sumberharjo in Sleman Regency, Yogyakarta Province, through the Sumber Tumuwuh Group, has successfully cultivated premium melon varieties Kaori and Dalmatian. The melons are grown on village-owned land with funding support from the Yogyakarta Special Region Fund.
Bumkal Sumberharjo Director, Choirun Sutrisno, said the land had previously been considered unproductive. His team then optimized it into a premium melon cultivation area using greenhouse technology.
According to him, the initiative is part of efforts to increase agricultural productivity while also driving community economic growth. “Beyond supporting food security, premium melon cultivation also has the potential to be developed as an agro-tourism destination. In this first harvest, the group managed to produce more than 50 kilograms of melons,” he said on Monday, August 3 2026.
Sleman Regent, Harda Kiswaya, said the agricultural sector is one of the key potentials for driving the village economy. With an area of about 2.5 hectares, modern horticultural development still has great opportunities to be expanded through creativity, innovation, and sustainable management.
He stressed that the Sleman Regency Administration will strengthen agricultural areas by providing seedlings of various commodities. Synergy between the community and the local administration is expected to optimize land use and expand economic benefits for residents.
“The Sleman Regency Administration continues to encourage innovation-based agricultural development through productive use of village-owned land.
