RRI.CO.ID, Jayapura - Cross-border trade between Indonesia's Papua Province and Papua New Guinea (PNG) via the Skouw Integrated Border Post (PLBN) recorded a sharp uptick in the first half of 2026, driven by rising demand for manufactured goods, including motorcycles.
The Jayapura Customs and Excise Office recorded the export of 22 motorcycles across various models to PNG's West Sepik Province during the January–June 2026 period. Representing a newly emerging export commodity for the border post, the total value of the 22 exported motorcycles reached IDR 679 million (USD 41,700).
Overall export value from Papua to Papua New Guinea hit IDR 43.51 billion in the first semester of 2026, a 33.28 percent increase compared to the IDR 32.65 billion recorded during the same period in 2025. Household necessities dominated the shipments, accounting for IDR 31.6 billion of total exports.
Other key commodities exported through the Skouw border included automotive spare parts valued at IDR 6.3 billion, machinery and electronic goods totaling IDR 2.2 billion, construction materials reaching IDR 2 billion, and coffins valued at IDR 8 million.
Customs authorities highlighted that the growth in trade volume underscores the strategic role of the Skouw border corridor in supporting economic integration between the neighboring countries.
Head of Internal Compliance and Public Relations at the Jayapura Customs and Excise Agency, Eston Erlangga, confirmed the shifting dynamics in cross-border trade commodities.
"Motorcycles are indeed a new type of commodity exported to Papua New Guinea, the export value for these 22 motorcycle units reached IDR 679 million" Eston said in Jayapura on Tuesday, July 28, 2026, as quoted by Antara.
He added that the steady growth across consumer goods, automotive parts, and machinery reflects rising reliance on Indonesian products in PNG's neighboring border regions. ***
