RRI.CO.ID, Gorontalo - Leveraging the biodiversity of a conservation area, Natura Community in Gorontalo Province has developed an ecoprint product featuring leaves from Nantu Forest. The initiative serves as environmental diplomacy to raise public awareness about preserving the local forest ecosystem through eco-friendly fashion.

Manager of Natura Community’s ecoprint program, Indira Lomban, said ecoprint is still relatively new in the region. Currently only two groups in Gorontalo produce ecoprint, so the product is beginning to gain recognition, especially among young people who are drawn to sustainable goods.

“Beyond being an eco-friendly fashion item, ecoprint also functions as an educational tool and a campaign to encourage young people to care more about the environment,” she said in Gorontalo on Tuesday, 28 July 2026.

The collective uses cotton and silk as the primary materials for all its ecoprint products. Natural dyes, such as secang wood and other plant-based mordants, are employed to reduce the waste impacts associated with synthetic dyes.

According to Indira, promoting ecoprint is also part of a campaign to lessen textile waste from the fashion industry while introducing Nantu Forest as a biologically rich area that is one of Gorontalo Province’s natural assets.

“One of our ecoprint signatures is using leaves from Nantu Forest as motifs. Each buyer is introduced to Nantu Forest in Gorontalo Regency so more people understand the importance of protecting that area,” she said, as quoted by Antara.

She added that public interest in ecoprint has grown since Komunitas Natura began taking part in various exhibitions. Printing businesses, boutiques, and Karawo artisans have started exploring collaborations to develop ecoprint products in Gorontalo.

Currently Natura Community produces ecoprint fabric by the meter, T‑shirts, scarves, and tote bags. The collective has not set a production target yet, focusing first on environmental campaigning, although it has started receiving partnership requests.

“We are not pursuing sales targets at the moment, but going forward we will take production more seriously as collaboration requests increase,” she said.

One piece of ecoprint fabric is sold at around IDR 500,000 (USD 32), depending on the motif, the complexity of the production process, and the final product quality.

Natura Community’s ecoprint products have been showcased at various exhibitions, including the 17th National Farmers and Fishermen Week (PENAS) 2026 in Gorontalo. During the event, their items were purchased by delegations from Aceh, Makassar, Papua, and several other regions.

In addition to active participation in Micro, Small, and Medium Enterprises (MSME) fairs, Natura Community regularly conducts ecoprint training and workshops. These educational activities are presented at events such as Green Action Day, OMG Creative, the Water Conservation Festival, and household-based ecoparenting training. ***
