KBRN, Jakarta: The Indonesia's Ministry of Culture reaffirmed its commitment to preserving the legacy of Wage Rudolf Soepratman, the national hero and composer of the anthem Indonesia Raya, during an audience with the W.R. Soepratman Foundation at the ministry office in Jakarta, Wednesday (2/7/2025). Minister of Culture Fadli Zon welcomed representatives from the foundation to discuss collaborative efforts in promoting Soepratman’s contributions to the nation.

Minister Fadli expressed appreciation for the foundation’s dedication in raising public awareness of W.R. Soepratman's life and works. He emphasized the ministry’s support for cultural initiatives that preserve national identity and ensure that Soepratman’s artistic and historical legacy continues to inspire future generations.

Historical records presented during the meeting reaffirmed that W.R. Soepratman was born in Jatinegara on March 9, correcting previous assumptions that listed Purworejo as his birthplace. Minister Fadli also shared his personal collection of Soepratman’s music on vinyl, dating back to the 1910s, highlighting the historical and musical value of the composer’s works.

Endang Wahyuningsih, representing the foundation and a descendant of Soepratman’s sister, explained the foundation's goal of bringing together the extended family under a transparent and inclusive effort to preserve his legacy. She noted that until now, legacy efforts were limited to a small group, and the foundation aims to unite the wider family network to honor Soepratman’s diverse body of work.

In response, Minister Fadli offered to facilitate a reconciliation meeting for the Soepratman family. He expressed hope that the entire family would come together and work collaboratively in honoring their shared heritage, noting that the ministry is ready to support such a gathering.

Endang also pointed out the lack of recognition among younger generations regarding Soepratman’s full contributions. Many people only associate him with Indonesia Raya, while songs like Ibu Kita Kartini are also part of his repertoire. She proposed cultural programs to help engage younger audiences, including music festivals, songwriting and singing competitions, and art contests.

Minister Fadli welcomed the ideas, suggesting that a concert of Soepratman’s songs could be held ahead of National Heroes Day. He recommended involving well-known composers such as Addie MS, Erwin Gutawa, and Andi Rianto to help popularize Soepratman’s works among broader audiences. He described the plan as a potential milestone in national cultural appreciation.

The Ministry of Culture reiterated its readiness to support initiatives that preserve national history and honor figures like W.R. Soepratman. These efforts reflect Indonesia’s ongoing commitment to strengthening cultural identity and ensuring that its heroes and heritage remain relevant and celebrated in modern society.
