KBRN, Jakarta: Indonesia’s Meteorology, Climatology, and Geophysics Agency (BMKG) has detected Tropical Cyclone Errol developing in the southern waters near East Nusa Tenggara. The cyclone, classified as Category 3, is currently moving away from Indonesian territory.
“Tropical Cyclone Errol developed from the tropical disturbance 96S. It is located in the Indian Ocean south of Sumba Island, East Nusa Tenggara, with maximum wind speeds of 100 knots or 185 kilometers per hour, moving southeast away from Indonesian territory,” said BMKG meteorologist, Andika Hapsari, as quoted from the agency’s official report, Thursday (17/4/2025).
In addition to Errol, BMKG is also monitoring tropical disturbance 97S in the Arafura Sea. It is moving southeast at speeds of up to 20 knots or 37 kilometers per hour, also heading toward Australian waters.
“In general, the potential for Tropical Cyclone Seed 97S to develop into a tropical cyclone within the next 24–72 hours is low,” she added.
Despite both systems moving away from Indonesia, they are still expected to trigger heavy rainfall across the Nusa Tenggara region and southern Papua. High waves are also forecast for southern Indonesian waters, including the south of Java and the Arafura Sea in southern Maluku.
