KBRN, Bekasi: Indonesia has officially launched its first kratom export, sending 351 tons of the plant worth USD 1.05 million (IDR 17 billion). The shipment was dispatched from PT Oneject Indonesia in Cikarang, West Java, Friday (28/2/2025).

This export follows new government regulations that set clear trade standards for kratom. Minister of Trade Budi Santoso, who oversaw the shipment, emphasized the plant’s economic potential and praised the structured export system.

"These regulations ensure that farmers and exporters benefit from a profitable system," he said.

He also congratulated businesses that have successfully met export standards and entered the global market.

Kratom, widely grown along the Kapuas River in Kalimantan, is valued for its medicinal and wellness benefits. Previously, it was exported in raw form, limiting its market value.

To increase its competitiveness, the government now requires kratom to be processed before export. The new policy aims to improve quality and boost Indonesia’s global position in the industry.

The government introduced two key regulations to govern kratom exports. Minister of Trade Regulation No. 20 of 2024 lists prohibited export goods, while Minister of Trade Regulation No. 21 of 2024 sets specific conditions for kratom exports.

Under these rules, kratom can only be exported in cut, crushed, or powdered form. The maximum particle size allowed is 600 microns to ensure consistency in quality.

To meet international standards, PT Oneject Indonesia sterilized the kratom using electron beam irradiation before shipment. This process ensures the product is free from pathogens and safe for export.

"Our sterilization process guarantees that Indonesian kratom meets global hygiene standards," said Jahja Tear Tjahjana, President Director of PT Oneject Indonesia.

He added that this step is crucial for market acceptance.

Meanwhile, PT SUCOFINDO has been assigned to handle verification and laboratory testing for kratom exports. President Director Jobi Triananda emphasized the company’s commitment to strict quality control.

"We conduct rigorous inspections to ensure Indonesian kratom meets global standards," he said.

The company’s laboratories are accredited under international quality certifications.

Industry groups have welcomed the new regulations, saying they will improve export quality. Agus Widhiyanto from the Community Group Association for Borneo Natural Products (Kompar) noted that past kratom shipments faced rejections due to contamination.

"With these new rules, we have stronger protections for kratom exports," he said.

He believes this will increase global confidence in Indonesian kratom.

This first kratom export marks a new step for Indonesia’s trade sector. The government hopes it will open doors for more structured and profitable exports in the future.

"This achievement strengthens Indonesia’s position in the global herbal industry," said Minister Budi. He added that it will contribute to national economic growth.

The export ceremony was attended by several key officials. These included Secretary-General of the Ministry of Trade Isy Karim, PT SUCOFINDO, PT Oneject Indonesia, the Presidential Staff Office, the Indonesian Quarantine Agency, and the West Java Industry and Trade Office.
