KBRN, Jakarta: State-owned broadcaster Radio Republik Indonesia (RRI) has stood as a vital witness to the nation's journey since the dawn of independence.

Established on September 11, 1945, RRI was born from the spirit of radio fighters who refused to yield to Japanese occupation, embodying a legacy of unwavering patriotism.

As RRI approaches its 80th anniversary on September 11, 2025, the stories of its founding figures are being retold, among them Muhammad Yusuf Ronodipuro.

A pivotal figure in the early days of the republic, Ronodipuro was the voice who transmitted Indonesia’s declaration of independence to the world.

Born in Salatiga on September 30, 1919, and passing away in Jakarta in 2008, Ronodipuro is remembered as the first broadcaster to air the Proclamation of Indonesian Independence internationally.

On the night of August 17, 1945, he received the proclamation text from Syahrudin and Adam Malik. At 7 p.m. local time, he broadcast the message and then read it again in English.

His bold move aroused suspicion from the Imperial Japanese Army, yet the broadcast successfully reached audiences as far as BBC London, Radio America, Singapore, and even Japan.

On September 10, 1945, regional radio leaders convened to continue broadcasting the nation’s struggle. The following day, September 11, Radio Republik Indonesia was officially established as the voice of the people.

Ronodipuro’s career continued after independence, evolving from Head of RRI to a distinguished diplomat. He accompanied the Indonesian delegation to the Asian Radio Conference, served at the United Nations, and was later appointed ambassador.

As RRI prepares to mark eight decades of service, Ronodipuro’s fighting spirit endures. His legacy has solidified RRI’s role as a pillar of diplomacy, information, and national unity. ***
