KBRN, Jakarta: Cikajang subdistrict in Garut Regency, West Java, owns a metal sensation, Voice of Baceprot (V.O.B), which continues to make waves on the global music scene with their unique sound and identity.

Led by the dynamic Marsha (vocals and guitar), along with Sitti (bass), and Widi (drums), V.O.B has captured international attention as a hijab-wearing all-female band that blends heavy metal with Indonesian Nusantara characteristics.

Marsha's recent inclusion in the BBC's 100 Women list is a testament to the band's impact. "It's a huge honor and a reminder that small steps can make a big difference," Marsha shared in an interview with Voice of Indonesia last week, as quoted by rri.co.id

Born from humble beginnings in Garut, V.O.B faced numerous challenges, including limited resources for recording their early demos.

Today, they have their own creative space, Rium Baceprot, which is a hub for young people to engage in discussions, workshops, and creative pursuits.

Their journey has taken them to prestigious stages like the 2024 Glastonbury Festival in the UK.

"We were so nervous and thought no one would show up. But when we got on stage, the crowd was packed, even spilling outside the venue. It was an incredible experience," Marsha recalled.

As hijab-wearing metal musicians, V.O.B often confronts stereotypes. However, they've embraced their identity as a source of strength.

"We see the hijab as just another piece of clothing—something we wear because we're comfortable. It doesn't change how we think or how we make music," Marsha explained.

Through their music, V.O.B not only tackles big issues like gender equality but also introduces Indonesian culture to the world.

They seamlessly blend Sundanese pentatonic scales with local lyrics into their songs. "Metal fans are incredibly loyal, and we want to leave a lasting impression that Indonesia has something unique to offer," she said.

V.O.B is currently working on their second album and planning an Indonesian tour. "We want to connect more with our fans at home. A tour of Indonesia is our next big dream," Marsha concluded. ***
