KBRN, Jakarta: Satoru Mochizuki, born in Otsu, Shiga, Japan, on May 18, 1964, is now in the spotlight of Indonesian soccer.

The former player, now head coach of the Indonesian women's national team, has a long track record in soccer as both player and coach.

Mochizuki began his professional career at Nippon Kokan Club (NKK SC) in 1987 after graduating from Osaka University of Commerce.

He tasted immediate success with the club, finishing runner-up in the 1987-1988 Japan Soccer League season and winning the 1987 JSL Cup.

He was a versatile player, contributing both in midfield and attack, scoring 35 goals throughout his club career.

In 1992, he moved to Urawa Reds in the J1 League. Though his time there was shorter than at NKK, he still showed dedication as a reliable player.

In 1995, he joined Kyoto Purple Sanga, helping the team secure promotion to the J1 League before retiring in 1996.

At the international level, Mochizuki played for the Japanese national team in seven matches from 1988 to 1989. His debut came on January 27, 1988, in a match against the United Arab Emirates.

He also participated in the 1990 World Cup qualifiers, although Japan's move had to stop in the early stages.

After retiring, Mochizuki did not leave soccer. He turned to coaching and reached the pinnacle of his career as coach of the Japanese women's national team from 2008 to 2012.

Under his leadership, Japan won the 2011 FIFA Women's World Cup in Germany, defeating the United States in a penalty shootout.

The Japanese women’s national team participated in the 2012 Olympic Games in London. The Blue Samurai made it to the final round, although losing 2-1 to Canada in the final and had to settle for the silver medal.

These achievements established Mochizuki as one of the best coaches in Japanese women's soccer history.

From 2014 to 2017, he coached the Japanese university women's team before moving to Southeast Asia.

On February 20, 2024, he became head coach of the Indonesian women's national team, showing his commitment to developing women's soccer in the country.

Mochizuki's debut with Indonesia was a success. On May 28, 2024, Indonesia defeated Singapore 5-1 in a friendly match, raising hopes for the future of the Indonesian women's soccer.

Besides leading the senior team, Mochizuki also coaches the U-17 national team competing in the AFC U-17 Women's Asian Cup 2024 in Bali.
