Garin to Deliver Cultural Speech at Taman Ismail Marzuki

KBRN, Yogyakarta: Garin Nugroho is scheduled to deliver a cultural speech at Graha Bhakti Budaya, Taman Ismail Marzuki (TIM) cultural park in Jakarta, today (Nov 10).

Cultural speech is an effort by the Jakarta Arts Council (DKJ) to articulate a clear voice that represents ideas and thoughts through selected figures. It offers critical thinking related to issues of art, culture, and civilization.

The theme presented in the 2024 Cultural Speech is "Returning Gratitude to the People." The theme offers insight into cultural values with a sense of justice that has always been an unstoppable force. The event is part of the celebration of Taman Ismail Marzuki's 56th anniversary.

"Power and manipulation may temporarily subdue justice. But at the end, justice will always find its way," Garin said through an upload by the Jakarta Arts Council (DKJ) on Friday (Nov 8).

Quoted from festivalfilm.id, Garin Nugroho Riyanto, or better known as Garin Nugroho, went to Jakarta to study film at the Jakarta Arts Institute's (IKJ) Faculty of Cinematography. He graduated in 1985.

Born in Yogyakarta, Garin started his career as a director through documentary film productions. His name began in the spotlight after his first feature-length film, Cinta dalam Sepotong Roti (1990), won the Best Film Award at the 1991 Indonesian Film Festival.

His second Film, Surat untuk Bidadari (1992), brought Garin to the international film stage. Since then, his name skyrocketed and penetrated into various international film festivals.

At the celebration of 250 Years of Mozart (2006), Garin was selected as one of the six world innovative film directors, which later gave birth to Opera Jawa. At the end of 2006, he co-founded the Jogja-NETPAC Asian Film Festival (JAFF).

JAFF is a premier Asian film festival in Indonesia focusing on the development of Asian cinema. This festival not only contributes to introducing Asian cinema to a wider public in Indonesia, but it also provides a space for the intersection of many sectors such as arts, culture, and tourism.

Since its inception, JAFF has worked closely with NETPAC (Network for the Promotion of Asia Pacific Cinema), a worldwide organization of 30 member countries. NETPAC is a pan-Asian film and cultural organization involving critics, filmmakers, festival organizes and curators, distributors and exhibitors, as well as educators. It is considered a leading authority in Asian cinema.

Garin Nugroho is recognized for his notable contributions to the field of art. His works are not only emotionally evocative but also offer profound insights into cultural identity.

"Through the medium of art, ranging from film and performance to writing and installation, Garin Nugroho voices his concern about various social problems," DKJ writes in its Instagram account DKJ @jakartscouncil.

Also scheduled to join the event is Minister of Culture, Fadli Zon. The event will also be enlivened by the performance of Indonesian singer Hanifa Shabrina and orchestra conductor Nathania Karina. ***
