International Coffee Day, 5 Indonesian Coffee Plantations to be Visited

RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Every October 1, the world celebrates International Coffee Day. The day was officially established by the International Coffee Organization (ICO) in 2015, coinciding with Expo 2015 in Milan, Italy.

According to data from the Foreign Agricultural Service under the United States Department of Agriculture (USDA), Indonesia is the world’s fourth-largest coffee producer. For those who want to learn more about Indonesian coffee, these coffee plantations offer a chance to enjoy coffee while taking in the surrounding scenery, according to the official Indonesia Travel website.

1. Blawan Coffee Plantation, Bondowoso

Located in Sempol District, Bondowoso, East Java, Blawan Coffee Plantation sits on the slopes of Mount Ijen at an elevation of around 900 to 1,200 meters above sea level.

Managed by PTPN XII, the plantation covers around 1,700 hectares and produces Arabica coffee with fruity flavor characteristics. Visitors can enjoy views of the plantation and see the coffee processing facilities, including machinery dating back to the Dutch colonial era.

2. Banaran Coffee Plantation, Semarang Regency

Located in Semarang Regency, Central Java, Banaran Coffee Plantation offers a tourism experience that combines a coffee plantation with various recreational facilities.

Visitors can learn about coffee processing, taste coffee produced at the plantation, and enjoy the cool mountain air. The site also has a restaurant and several recreational attractions for families.

3. Gayo Highlands, Aceh

The Gayo Highlands in Aceh are known as one of the main producing areas for Gayo coffee, which is recognized in international markets. The area also offers scenic views of coffee plantations surrounded by hills and mountains.

Visitors can join plantation tours, see the coffee harvesting process, and learn how coffee is processed by local farmers. The experience offers a closer look at the journey coffee takes before reaching your cup.

4. Kertowono Coffee Plantation, Lumajang

Kertowono Coffee Plantation in Lumajang, East Java, is one of the region’s historic coffee plantations. The area also offers an educational tourism experience for visitors interested in learning about coffee production.

Visitors can see how coffee is cultivated and processed while enjoying the lush and peaceful surroundings of the plantation.

5. Malabar Coffee Plantation, Pangalengan

Moving to West Java, Malabar Coffee Plantation in Pangalengan, South Bandung, is one of Indonesia’s oldest coffee plantations. The area offers green scenery and the cool air typical of the highlands.

Visitors can also learn about the history of Malabar coffee and taste coffee produced in the area while enjoying the plantation’s natural surroundings.
