RRI.CO.ID, Lombok - Desert Point, locally known as Bangko-Bangko, is a renowned surf break on the southwestern tip of Lombok, West Nusa Tenggara. The spot is known for long, hollow left-hand barrels that can stretch for hundreds of meters when powerful swells and favorable conditions align.

The wave breaks over a shallow coral reef and begins with fast, critical sections before forming long barrel runs. On its best days, Desert Point can produce waves of up to around 300 meters, making the break particularly demanding for advanced surfers.

Desert Point works best with substantial southwest swells, with an optimal swell range of around 6 to 15 feet. Southeast winds can provide offshore conditions, while low tide is generally preferred for the wave to develop its characteristic shape.

The prime surfing window is generally from May to October, during Lombok's dry season. However, Desert Point is known for its fickle nature, requiring a precise combination of swell, wind, and tide before the wave reaches its full potential.

Accessing the lineup requires careful navigation around the shallow reef. Surfers typically use channels to reach the break, while strong paddling skills and familiarity with the wave are important because the reef becomes increasingly exposed as the tide drops.

Reaching Desert Point requires an overland journey to Lombok's southwestern coast. From Bali, travelers can cross to Lombok by ferry or fast boat before continuing by road toward Bangko-Bangko, while the final approach includes roads leading through the remote coastal landscape.

The remote location contributes to Desert Point's rugged atmosphere, with the break situated away from Lombok's main tourist centers. Its southwestern setting also leaves it exposed to Indian Ocean swells, helping the reef produce powerful waves when the right swell reaches the coast.

Several hazards require serious attention, including the shallow and sharp coral reef, strong currents, and rapidly changing conditions. The break can also attract a larger lineup when it is working, making proper surfing etiquette and awareness of other surfers important.

With its long left-hand walls, hollow barrels, and demanding reef, Desert Point represents one of Lombok's most challenging surf destinations. The combination of powerful Indian Ocean swells and a precise low-tide setup makes the break particularly distinctive when it reaches its ideal conditions.
