RRI.CO.ID, North Sipora - Telescopes is a world-class left-hand reef break on the northwest coast of Sipora Island, Mentawai Islands. Also known as Tellies, the spot combines a steep takeoff, long barrel sections, and clean wave faces that attract intermediate to advanced surfers.

Telescopes curves around an outer reef and can produce a long, open barrel soon after the takeoff. When the wave lines up properly, surfers can continue along the shoulder before reaching an inside section known as Monkey's Corner.

The break works with different swell conditions, although a solid west swell can produce its strongest and most impressive waves. Even when the swell becomes smaller or shifts more toward the south, the wave can still provide clean walls for surfers to perform turns.

The wave can offer rides of around 200 meters when conditions are favorable. Its relatively readable walls also accommodate both natural-foot and goofy-foot surfers, while sections of the reef provide areas with less demanding wave shapes.

Telescopes performs best with head-high to double-overhead waves, with southwest to west swells providing suitable energy. Southeasterly winds can create cleaner offshore conditions, while mid to high tides generally provide better wave shape and greater reef coverage.

The main surfing season runs from April to October, when the Mentawai Islands can receive consistent swells and favorable winds. Surfers should still check daily conditions because Telescopes has an inconsistent character and can vary significantly depending on swell direction and size.

Access to the lineup requires careful navigation because the break sits over a shallow coral reef. Surfers need sufficient experience to manage the steep takeoff, powerful waves, and changing sections while maintaining control over their position.

Strong currents can also make positioning more difficult, particularly when the waves become larger. The spot can attract crowds because of its reputation, increasing the need for surfers to maintain awareness of other people in the lineup.

Reaching Telescopes generally involves traveling to Padang before continuing toward Sipora Island and arranging boat transportation to the surf break. Its remote setting means surfers should prepare equipment and safety supplies before heading into the water.

With its long left-hand barrels, steep shoulders, and tropical Mentawai setting, Telescopes offers a demanding surf experience for surfers with the skills to handle reef breaks. The combination of powerful waves and extended rides makes the spot one of the notable surf destinations around North Sipora.
