Abasi Beach has several surf spots with both left and right waves that range from manageable sections to more powerful breaks. Beginners can start with the beach breaks before progressing to the reef sections as they gain confidence and become more familiar with local conditions.
The reef break can produce powerful barrel waves, particularly during the morning and late afternoon between November and February. Surf conditions become more consistent during the October to March period, when surfers can explore several breaks along the surrounding coastline.
The local surfing community plays an important role in developing surfing at Abasi Beach. Abasi Surfing has introduced children to the sport from an early age, while more experienced local surfers also guide visitors and provide lessons for those who want to learn.
Local surfers initially trained with simple wooden boards before many progressed to professional-grade surfboards. Some surfers from Abasi have also participated in surfing competitions in Bali alongside competitors from other countries.
Visitors can stay at homestays operated by local residents around Abasi Beach. These accommodations provide an opportunity to experience the village atmosphere while remaining close to the surf spots and other coastal attractions.
Abasi Beach also offers activities beyond surfing when the sea becomes calmer. From April to early October, visitors can enjoy snorkeling around the coral reef, which is home to various marine species, including anemonefish, parrotfish, trevally, wrasse, and moorish idols.
The beach also lies close to Pasir Putih Beach, which visitors can reach in around five to ten minutes. Local residents and guides can assist visitors who want to explore nearby beaches and surfing locations around Manokwari.
Beginners should check local conditions before entering the water and consider surfing with experienced companions or local guides. Surfers are also advised to bring their own equipment, particularly when planning to explore several remote surf breaks around Manokwari.
