RRI.CO.ID, Sentani – Lake Sentani is a large freshwater lake in Jayapura Regency, Papua. Located near Papua's capital, Jayapura, and Dortheys Hiyo Eluay - Sentani Airport in the northwest, the lake lies at the foot of the Cyclops Mountains and is known for its broad waters, small islands, surrounding hills, and communities nearby.
The lake covers roughly 9,360 hectares and extends across several districts in the regency. Its landscape includes numerous small islands and villages along the shoreline, while the Cyclops Mountains provide a prominent natural backdrop to the lake's northern side.
Lake Sentani is closely associated with the Sentani people and their cultural traditions. Visitors can encounter traditional arts, handicrafts, houses, and other aspects of community life around the lake, while some villages also have historical or archaeological features such as rock paintings.
One of the lake's best-known cultural events is the annual Lake Sentani Festival. The festival brings together traditional dances, music, handicrafts, and other cultural performances, with activities taking place around and on the lake, providing a public showcase of the region's cultural heritage.
The lake can also be explored by boat, allowing visitors to travel between its islands and observe villages and the surrounding landscape from the water. Other attractions in the wider area include hills and viewpoints overlooking the lake, while nearby sites such as Mount Ifar offer views toward Lake Sentani and the Cyclops Mountains.
Lake Sentani is relatively accessible for visitors arriving in Papua because Sentani Airport is located nearby. From the airport, the lake can be reached by road, while travelers staying in Jayapura can generally reach the lake in less than an hour, depending on their destination and traffic conditions.
Lake Sentani offers an introduction to Papua through both its natural landscape and Indigenous culture. Its combination of freshwater, islands, mountains, villages, and cultural traditions makes it an important destination in the Jayapura area and one of the places to experience natural and cultural characteristics of Papua.
