Kelimutu National Park: Flores' Mystical Three-Colored Crater Lakes

RRI.CO.ID, Ende - Kelimutu National Park is renowned for its three crater lakes, each displaying a distinctive color within the volcanic landscape. Located in Ende Regency, East Nusa Tenggara, the site has gained international recognition as one of Flores’ most remarkable natural attractions.

The three lakes sit within separate volcanic craters and can display different hues at the same time. Microbial activity and gas temperatures inside the lakes influence their striking colors, making the landscape particularly distinctive.

The moss-green Tiwu Nuwa Muri Kofai reaches approximately 127 meters deep and covers around 5.5 hectares. Nearby, Tiwu Ata Polo spans about 4.5 hectares and is also known for changing colors over time.

The third crater lake, Tiwu Ata Mbupu, reaches approximately 67 meters deep and covers about four hectares. Together, the three lakes form one of the most recognizable and frequently photographed natural landscapes in Flores.

Visitors seeking clearer views can plan their trip between June and August, when conditions are generally drier. The period can also provide safer conditions for navigating the steep terrain, which is prone to landslides.

Hikers usually begin their ascent from Moni, the nearest village to the national park, between 2 and 3 a.m. Starting before dawn allows visitors to reach the summit in time to witness the sunrise over the crater lakes.

Beyond its colorful volcanic lakes, Kelimutu National Park protects a range of endangered plants and animals. The surrounding forest provides visitors with an opportunity to experience a rare natural habitat while exploring one of Flores’ distinctive landscapes.
