RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - The world-class diving of Maratua Island in Berau Regency, East Kalimantan, took center stage during the Famtrip Marine Maratua 2026 initiative, as Indonesia moves to capture a larger share of the Southeast Asian special-interest tourism market.

Organized from August 10 to 15, 2026, the familiarization tour brought key dive center operators from Malaysia and Singapore to explore nine premier dive spots surrounding the island. The diving showcases featured Maratua's vibrant marine biodiversity and underwater topography, complemented by visits to local sites such as Gumantung Cave, Harapan Bay, and Dayak Tumbit Village.

By putting Maratua’s diving credentials at the forefront, the campaign targets two of Indonesia's most vital tourist markets, Malaysia and Singapore, which generated 1,361,772 and 739,721 arrivals respectively through June 2026, to turn regional interest into dedicated diving itineraries.

Tourism ministry officials and market development directors highlighted that showcasing premier dive sites directly to regional operators connects island businesses with strategic international distributors. Deputy for Tourism Marketing at the Ministry of Tourism Ni Made Ayu Marthini detailed the strategic objectives of the familiarization tour.

"Through this famtrip, dive centers can directly experience Maratua’s diving potential, accommodations, and auxiliary tourism services, we hope this experience serves as a reference for operators to include Maratua in the travel packages they offer across the Malaysian and Singaporean markets, ensuring this activity leads directly to product development and sustained marketing," Ni Made Ayu said in Jakarta on Wednesday, August 26, 2026, as quoted on the ministry's official website.

Assistant Deputy for International Tourism Marketing Development I at the Ministry of Tourism Dedi Ahmad Kurnia emphasized the high commercial value of neighboring tourist markets.

"Malaysia and Singapore represent highly strategic markets for Indonesian tourism, not only in terms of overall arrival volume but also for specialized niches such as diving, The ministry hopes the connections forged during this event generate sustainable business partnerships, driving broader international promotion and expanding economic benefits for Maratua's local community," Dedi added. ***
