RRI.CO.ID, Banyuwangi - The Ijen Geopark Run 2026 officially started in Banyuwangi, East Java, on Sunday, August 23, 2026. A total of 839 runners from various parts of Indonesia explored the scenic landscapes of Mount Ijen.

The runners started from Paltuding Ijen at 5 a.m. local time and followed routes through the Ijen Geopark area. The event featured three categories, covering 21 kilometers, 10 kilometers, and 5 kilometers.

Participants ran through mountainous terrain surrounded by cool air and lush natural scenery. The event offered runners an opportunity to combine physical activity with nature-based tourism in Ijen.

Ivana, a 24-year-old runner from Banjarmasin, joined the 5-kilometer category with her extended family. She said the event allowed them to exercise while enjoying a scenic route and taking a family holiday.

“Our purpose in joining this event is to have a holiday with our family. Besides exercising, we want to enjoy the atmosphere because it is difficult to find such a beautiful running route,” Ivana said.

A similar experience was shared by Sulung, a 26-year-old runner from Probolinggo who joined the 10-kilometer category. He said the cold mountain atmosphere and beautiful scenery made the race a memorable experience.

“Especially after trying the route, it was very interesting and truly beautiful. I am happy to take part and will join again in the future,” Sulung said.

The Ijen Geopark Run marks the opening of Indonesia’s Geopark Run Series 2026/2027. The series will continue with the Minang Geopark Run in West Sumatra before visiting other geopark areas across Indonesia.

Deputy Assistant for National Events at the Ministry of Tourism, Ni Komang Ayu Astiti, said the series promotes Indonesia’s geoparks. She said the national sport tourism event introduces Indonesia’s natural beauty through running.

Astiti also encouraged runners to enjoy Ijen’s scenery, local hospitality, and culinary experiences during their stay. She invited them to return to Ijen with their families and friends.
