RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s tourism sector is emerging as a key engine of economic growth, with rising foreign arrivals, stronger domestic travel, and surging investment all contributing to positive momentum in the first half of 2026.
Tourism Minister Widiyanti Putri Wardhana said on Monday, August 10, that adaptive strategies--ranging from market pivots and targeted promotions to improved destinations and products--have helped sustain growth across major indicators.
“Tourism success is not only measured by visitor numbers but also by the economic benefits they leave behind for communities, businesses, and regions,” she said, as quoted by Antara.
According to the Central Bureau of Statistics (BPS), foreign arrivals reached 7.45 million between January and June, up 5.71 percent year‑on‑year.
Growth was strongest from Asia (nearly 10 percent), Southeast Asia (8.22 percent), and Oceania (6.60 percent), placing Indonesia as the second‑fastest growing destination in Southeast Asia. Average spending per foreign visitor also rose 6.36 percent to about USD 1,313.
Domestic tourism remained robust, with 630.41 million trips recorded--up 2.71 percent--while outbound travel by Indonesians fell 2.40 percent, resulting in a surplus of nearly 3 million visits.
Investment in tourism climbed 16.64 percent to IDR 39.68 trillion, split between IDR 12.19 trillion in foreign investment (up 37 percent) and IDR 27.48 trillion in domestic investment (up 9.39 percent).
Minister Widiyanti emphasized that such investment not only builds facilities but also creates jobs, strengthens local supply chains, and fosters new economic hubs.
Hotel occupancy averaged 48.20 percent, rising 2.48 percentage points from last year. The sector’s ripple effect was evident in national growth: Indonesia’s economy expanded 5.29 percent in Q2 2026, with tourism‑linked industries such as accommodation and food services (10.60 percent), transport and warehousing (5.65 percent), and other services contributing significantly.
“These figures show how tourism activity can energize multiple sectors at once,” Minister Widiyanti said. ***
