Luxury Train Introduced to Boost Indonesia’s Tourism

RRI.CO.ID, Bandung - State-owned Railways Company PT. Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) President Director, Bobby Rasyidin, said Nusantara Explorer was designed to offer a tourist train service that can strengthen the competitiveness of Indonesia’s tourism sector. He said the development is a follow-up to the President’s idea and directive.
“Nusantara Explorer was born from the idea and directive of President Prabowo Subianto for KAI to present a tourist train that delivers a premium travel experience while introducing the richness of Indonesian culture. We followed up on that directive through the skills and creativity of KAI employees at Surabaya Gubeng Train Maintenance Center,” said Bobby on Sunday, August 2, 2026.
The development of Nusantara Explorer also reflects the ability of Surabaya Gubeng Train Maintenance Center workers to develop railway facilities with increasingly diverse service standards. Their technical competence, precision, and experience have become important assets in delivering service innovation based on local talent.
“Railways have great potential to strengthen national tourism. We are developing Nusantara Explorer so that the journey becomes part of the tourism experience, from comfort and service to cuisine and cultural richness presented in every part of the train,” added Bobby.
Nusantara Explorer is designed as a 12-car set, including sleeper cabin cars, a Grand Restaurant, a lounge, and operational support cars. The sleeper cabin concept is being developed in three categories, such as Signature Class, Advance Class, and Compact Class. Each offers a different room layout and level of privacy to suit customer needs.
The Grand Restaurant is designed as a culinary service space with dining tables and private dining areas. Meanwhile, the lounge is prepared as a place for relaxation and interaction, equipped with lounge chairs, a bar, entertainment facilities, a piano, an audio system, and panoramic windows for enjoying the scenery during the trip.
The interior of Nusantara Explorer highlights Indonesian character through warm-toned materials and soft lighting. This character is further reinforced by cultural inspirations such as wayang kulit (shadow puppet made out of animal skin), Batik Lasem, Sekar Jagad, and Balinese motifs in the decorative elements, materials, and color choices.
“We appreciate the trust and directive from the President to KAI. Nusantara Explorer is one of the steps to strengthen railway services while also supporting the development of Indonesia’s tourism, while continuing to prioritize safety, reliability, and service quality,” concluded Bobby.
KAI will continue refining Nusantara Explorer according to the development stages. Information on routes, schedules, fares, the final train composition, and the start of commercial operation will be announced after all operational, service, safety, and reliability preparations are complete.
