Baluran National Park, the Charm of Savanna and Wildlife at the Eastern Tip of Java Island
RRI.CO.ID, Situbondo - Unlike most of the regions in Java Island that are dominated by green expanses, Baluran National Park in Situbondo Regency, East Java, offers a natural panorama of vast savannas with various wild animals living freely. The uniqueness of its landscape and biodiversity makes this area one of the premier natural tourist destinations in Indonesia.
Based on information from the official Wonderful Indonesia website, Baluran National Park covers an area of approximately 22,500 hectares, spanning the regions of Situbondo and Banyuwangi. This conservation area consists of lowland forests, mangrove forests, coastal forests, and savannas that serve as habitats for various types of flora and fauna, including the banteng (the Javan bull), which is the main icon of the national park.

In this area, tourists can witness a variety of wildlife such as banteng, deer, mouse deer, wild buffalo, peacocks, and various types of birds of prey. Baluran is also a habitat for around 26 species of mammals and 155 types of birds, including red junglefowl, hornbills, green peafowl, and storks.
The natural conditions of Baluran are influenced by the dry climate due to the eastern monsoon winds. During the dry season, the savanna area transforms into a golden expanse that becomes the main attraction for tourists. Meanwhile, when the rainy season arrives, the vegetation grows greener and several puddles appear as a source of life for the wildlife in the area.
In addition to its rich fauna, Baluran National Park also boasts a rich diversity of flora with around 444 plant species. Some characteristic plants that can adapt to dry conditions include widoro bukol, neem, pilang, tamarind, candlenut, and gebang, which also support the balance of the conservation area's ecosystem.
Historically, Baluran was designated as a Wildlife Sanctuary by the Dutch colonial government in 1937 after being discovered by A.H. Loedeboer. Then in 1980, the Indonesian government designated the area as a National Park to protect its biodiversity and maintain the sustainability of its ecosystem.
To reach Baluran National Park, tourists can take a six-hour drive from Surabaya via the northern coastal route of Java to Situbondo. Alternatively, travelers can route through Banyuwangi, which has flight access from Surabaya and Denpasar, Bali.
With a combination of savanna, forest, beach, and the presence of well-preserved wildlife, Baluran National Park offers a unique nature tourism experience. This area is a choice for tourists who want to enjoy the beauty of nature while also getting to know the rich biodiversity of Java Island.
