  • Borobudur has launched educational and cultural programs for the 2026 school holiday season.
  • The activities combine history, arts, and interactive learning for families and children.

RRI.CO.ID, Magelang - State tourism operator InJourney Destination Management (IDM) has officially launched a highly curated school holiday campaign titled Liburan Nyaman Penuh Makna (Comfortable and Meaningful Holidays) at the Borobudur Temple compound in Magelang, Central Java.

Running from late June through mid-July 2026, the comprehensive program blends immersive historical education, traditional arts workshops, and deep personal reflection to provide families with a holistic alternative to standard sightseeing.

The initiative transforms the UNESCO World Heritage site from a passive architectural monument into an active, open-air learning laboratory designed to strengthen the public's connection to native Indonesian history and spiritual philosophy.

"Borobudur Temple is not only a world architectural masterpiece, but also a learning space that holds historical, cultural, and spiritual values. Through a series of School Holiday programs at Borobudur Temple, we want tourists to enjoy their vacation while also getting to know Indonesia's rich culture better," said Commercial Director of InJourney Destination Management Gistang Panutur, on Tuesday, June 30, 2026, as quoted by Antara.

Among the standout offerings is Tanceping Niat, a unique reflective experience centered around the iconic Unfinished Buddha statue. Launched on June 21, 2026, this program offers a sanctuary for visitors seeking a moment of absolute silence, allowing them to participate in intention-setting and symbolic stress-release rituals away from the heavy holiday crowds.

For younger demographics, IDM has mapped out several experiential learning tracks to keep children engaged throughout the holidays. The Junior Wanderer Holiday Adventure, slated for July 5, 2026, offers a guided family exploration trip that teaches children the deep history and ecological landscape of the Borobudur valley for a standalone registration fee of Rp150,000.

Additionally, the Junior Wanderer Heritage Lab operates every weekend from June 27 to July 12, 2026, across the Samudraraksa Ship Museum and Karmawibhangga Museum. This interactive lab hosts on-site creative workshops, including wayang leather puppet coloring, live gamelan orchestral practice, and traditional Javanese dance lessons, with entry priced at IDR 45,000 (USD 2.51) per workshop.

Finally, families can visit Kampung Dolan, a nostalgic zone set up at the Samudraraksa Ship Museum from June 20 to July 16, 2026, which introduces modern children to traditional Indonesian street games while preserving ancestral concepts of teamwork and creative play.

The holiday season will also feature heavy theatrical programming to bring the intricate stone carvings of the temple to life. The specialized Kidung Tribangga Dance, a dance drama directly adapting narrative parables found on the monument's stone bas-reliefs, will stage its final performance at the Plaza Beringin sector on July 5, 2026, from 3.00 p.m. to 3.30 p.m. local time.

Furthermore, a rotating schedule of regional performing arts will dominate the temple grounds. Following the successful staging of the Sendratari Geger Goa Kiskendo Dance and Warok Manunggal Dance in late June, the Plaza Beringin will host the expressive Tari Menak Kontjer on Wednesday afternoon, July 1, 2026.

This will be followed shortly by a high-energy Topeng Ireng Dance (Black Mask Dance) performance scheduled at the newly opened Kampung Seni Borobudur Amphitheater on Friday, July 3, 2026. ***
