RRI.CO.ID, Magelang - The annual Vesak Day celebrations at the Borobudur Temple compounds in Magelang Regency, Central Java, are increasingly proving to be a powerful economic engine for the region. The event has transformed from a purely spiritual gathering into a major driver for local tourism and community welfare.
Magelang Regent, Grengseng Pamuji, emphasized on Monday, May 25, 2026, that the local administration intends to fully capitalize on the massive influx of pilgrims and tourists. The administration aims to create a ripple effect that extends well beyond temple visits by actively encouraging travelers to immerse themselves in the surrounding villages.
"We hope for many visits to Borobudur, for tourists to stay overnight in Borobudur, and to transact in Borobudur. That is our hope," said Grengseng, as quoted by Antara.
To support this economic push, the local administration is prioritizing infrastructure readiness. Grengseng committed to optimizing regional facilities to support the surge in visitors, ensuring that public investments yield real benefits for the community.
" We will strive to coordinate so that what has been installed and built can be utilized by the community and run according to public expectations," he added.
The economic momentum generated by the sacred holiday is no longer confined to the day of the festival itself. Borobudur Subdistrict Head, Subiyanto, revealed that the financial benefits now begin rolling into the area weeks in advance, with lodging sectors experiencing an unprecedented annual boom.
"One month before Vesak, homestays and hotels are already fully booked. This includes many local residents' homes being rented out to welcome the Vesak festivities. So, every year, this peak period is highly anticipated for its bustling activity," explained Subiyanto. ***
