RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta — Surowono temple, located in Kediri Regency, East Java, stands as a highly captivating historical tourism destination. This ancient ancestral heritage site offers a unique charm through its fascinating wall reliefs.
Featuring the Sri Tanjung relief as its centerpiece, the carvings depict an ancient legend of a wife's profound loyalty to her husband. This very folklore subsequently laid the foundation for the origin of the name of Banyuwangi Regency in East Java.
Interestingly, the legendary tale on the relief remains closely intertwined with the lifestyle of the local community today. Nur Ali noted that residents living around the temple are highly passionate about cultivating ornamental fish.
"This actually correlates with the story of Sri Tanjung. The titular character is indeed depicted riding a fish," explained the manager of Surowono temple, Nur Ali, on Sunday, May 17, 2026.
Physically, the Candi Surowono complex is relatively small, occupying an area of less than one hectare. Due to its close proximity to residential settlements, the development of supporting tourism facilities remains limited.
Despite the spatial constraints, the management employs a specific strategy to ensure that the site's historical value is effectively communicated and understood by tourists. The management is committed to accompanying every arriving visitor and identifying the purpose of their visit.
"We always accompany the visitors. If their objective here is indeed to learn about history, we will provide the best possible information," he said.
This historical education is highly prioritized for the younger generation, particularly visiting school groups. Most students usually visit the temple to complete school group or individual assignments.
"We strive to explain things accurately and properly, so that children understand that ancestral heritage is highly vital to study," he remarked.
On the other hand, physical maintenance of the ancient site is routinely conducted to preserve the authenticity and longevity of the temple walls. Cleaning staff must periodically remove disruptive vegetation, such as moss, to prevent it from eroding the stone reliefs.
To enjoy this historical and educational tourism experience, visitors are not charged any admission fees. Guests can simply enter and are only requested to fill out a guest book for data collection purposes. (Annaila Azzahra/EN)
