RRI.CO.ID, Lumajang - The natural allure of Lumajang Regency, East Java is increasingly capturing the international spotlight, as the region records a significant jump in foreign tourist arrivals. Between March 14 and April 5, 2026, the regency welcomed 22,090 international visitors, solidifying its position as a key driver of East Java’s tourism growth.
According to data from the East Java Provincial Tourism and Culture Agency, two iconic destinations, Tumpak Sewu Waterfall and Teras Semeru, have emerged as the primary magnets for global travelers. During the latter half of March alone, Tumpak Sewu recorded 3,558 foreign visitors, while Teras Semeru followed with 1,271 arrivals.
Lumajang Regent Indah Amperawati noted that the regency’s strength lies in its untouched landscapes, which align perfectly with the post-pandemic global shift toward eco-tourism and open-space experiences.
“The strength is the authenticity of nature. The challenge is maintaining the quality of the experience so that it remains consistent,” Indah said in Lumajang on Saturday, April 25, 2026, as quoted by Infopublik.id.
The Regent emphasized that today’s travelers are increasingly seeking authentic, low-density destinations. While the surge in arrivals is a positive indicator for the local economy, the regional administration is prioritizing sustainable management to ensure the environment remains pristine.
Indah explained that managing the carrying capacity of these sites is essential. “Growth must be balanced with good management so that the environment remains protected,” she added, highlighting the need for regulated visitor numbers and adequate basic facilities.
Beyond conservation, the tourism boom is fueling a local economic revival. The rise in visitors has spurred the growth of supporting services, including local tour guides, transportation providers, and micro-enterprises operating near the major landmarks. ***
