RRI.CO.ID, Padang - Padang, the capital of West Sumatra, is defined not only by its bustling port and coastal charm but also by a landmark that has become inseparable from its identity, the Sitti Nurbaya Bridge.

Built in 1995 and inaugurated in 2002, the 156‑meter span stretches gracefully across the Batang Arau River, linking the city’s historic old town with Gunung Padang, an iconic hill rising 80 meters above the sea level.

Yet the bridge is more than just steel and concrete. It serves as a cultural symbol, a leisure destination, and a living gateway into local folklore. For residents and visitors alike, crossing it is not just a matter of reaching the other side but also an encounter with Padang’s layered history and enduring stories.

The bridge takes its name from Marah Rusli’s classic novel “Sitti Nurbaya: Kasih Tak Sampai” (Sitti Nurbaya: A Love Unfulfilled), which is set in the Gunung Padang area. At the peak of the hill, visitors will find what locals believe to be the tomb of Sitti Nurbaya, a site that continues to attract tourists.

Behind Gunung Padang lies another legendary destination: the Malin Kundang Stone at Air Manis Beach. Although the stone figure and shipwreck ruins were created in the 1980s, they symbolize the famous tale of Malin Kundang, enriching Padang’s cultural heritage alongside the legend of Sitti Nurbaya.

The Malin Kundang Stone at Air Manis Beach was constructed in the 1980s; rather than being an actual cursed stone, the sculpture is an artwork created by artists Dasril Bayras and Ibenzani Usman to serve as a tourist attraction.

The Sitti Nurbaya bridge is especially popular at sunset. As the sky glows over the Batang Arau, visitors gather to watch the romantic view, while at night the bridge is illuminated with colorful lights.

Fishing boats, small cruise vessels, and tourist boats line the riverbanks, creating a picturesque scene. The area has been revitalized with neat sidewalks, now a favorite spot for jogging and evening strolls.

Culinary experiences add to the charm. Vendors around the bridge sell roasted corn and pisang kapik, a traditional snack made from grilled bananas pressed flat and topped with cheese, chocolate sprinkles, and condensed milk.

These treats, often enjoyed while watching the sunset, have become part of the bridge’s identity.

Located just 2.5 kilometers from Padang’s Ground Zero, the bridge has become a favorite gathering spot for visitors of all ages. Among them is Endah, a traveler from Yogyakarta, who shared her impressions.

“I really enjoy the beauty of the Batang Arau River, especially at sunset, from the top of this bridge. The view is stunning,” she said, recently.

Still, Endah noted a challenge. “The parking here is a bit difficult, especially for cars,” she explained, adding that she had to leave her vehicle near food vendors.

She expressed hope that the local administration would provide proper parking facilities, so visitors’ vehicles don’t disrupt traffic and the area looks tidier. “After all, besides serving locals every day, the Sitti Nurbaya Bridge has also become a tourist destination,” she added.

The Sitti Nurbaya Bridge is more than just a structure, it is a living symbol of Padang’s history, literature, and everyday life. With its romantic sunsets, vibrant culinary scene, and ties to local legends, the bridge continues to draw visitors from near and far.

It offers not only a scenic view but also a cultural journey, making it one of the most memorable destinations in West Sumatra and a place where the city’s stories and beauty come together in harmony. ***
