RRI.CO.ID, Riau – Penyengat Island continues to demonstrate its role as a strategic destination rooted in history, culture, and religion, capable of driving regional economic growth in the Riau Islands Province. The Riau Islands Provincial Government continues to carry out massive revitalization of the Penyengat Island area.

Various development projects have been implemented, ranging from road improvements, drainage repairs, installation of streetlights, development of tourist attractions, provision of public facilities such as restrooms, to waste management. Furthermore, tourism sector development also involves the community through the strengthening of SMEs, homestay management, and various cultural-based tourist attractions.

As quoted by a written press release on Sunday, April 19, 2026, the Head of the Riau Islands Provincial Tourism Office, Hasan, affirmed that Penyengat Island possesses significant potential as a history- and culture-based tourist destination capable of generating tangible economic impacts.

“Penyengat Island not only possesses high historical value but also serves as a regional economic driver through the development of culture- and religion-based tourism,” he said.

Hasan added that a regenerative tourism approach is key to the future development of Penyengat Island. These efforts are beginning to yield positive results. From January through March 2026, tourist visits to Penyengat Island reached approximately 6,200 people, including both international and domestic tourists, particularly from Malaysia, Singapore, Europe, and the Indonesian archipelago, especially during national holidays and Eid al-Fitr.

The Riau Islands Provincial Government, together with the Tanjungpinang City Government, also continues to provide guidance to MSME operators and homestay managers so they can provide quality services to tourists. Moving forward, the government plans to build a language monument, improve street lighting, and continue the revitalization of the Balai Adat as a new tourist destination.

“The construction of this language monument will become a new icon that not only strengthens historical identity but also generates a multiplier effect for the tourism and creative economy sectors,” he said.

As a microcosm of the glory of Malay-Islamic civilization, Penyengat Island holds significant historical value, including its role as the birthplace of the Malay grammar system that formed the foundation of the Indonesian language through the works of the great figure Raja Ali Haji. Additionally, this area has been designated as a national cultural heritage site and is being further developed as a premier halal tourism destination.
