RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta: The momentum of the Eid homecoming (mudik) and holiday season in 2026 has significantly increased public mobility while reinforcing the role of the tourism sector as a driver of the national economy.Vice Minister of Tourism ,Ni Luh Puspa, during a press conference at the Presidential Staff Office (KSP) in Jakarta on Wednesday, April 1, 2026, addressing “The Impact of Eid al-Fitr 2026 on Tourism and Trade,” revealed that total national passenger movement reached approximately 147.55 million people, based on data from the Ministry of Transportation—an increase of 2.53 percent from the initial projection.
“About 12 percent, or approximately 17.27 million people, took advantage of this year’s Eid holiday to travel to tourist destinations. This marks a 6.3 percent increase compared to last year. However, these are still estimates; the official figures will be released by Statistics Indonesia (BPS), as we are collaborating with them to calculate both domestic and international tourist numbers,” Ni Luh Puspa conveyed.
Among the most visited tourist attractions during the Eid period were Malioboro in Yogyakarta with 468,004 visitors, Ancol with 343,623 visitors, followed by Ragunan Zoo, Kota Lama Semarang, Al Jabbar Grand Mosque in Bandung, Pangandaran Beach, the National Monument (Monas), the Great Mosque of Demak, Telaga Sarangan in Magetan, and Taman Safari Indonesia in Bogor.
Meanwhile, average tourist spending—both per family and per individual—saw a slight decline compared to last year, based on expenditure estimates from the Ministry of Transportation. Family spending decreased from around IDR 4.95 million to IDR 3.78 million, while individual spending dropped from IDR 1.2 million to IDR 1.15 million.
However, this does not indicate weakening consumption, but rather a shift toward more efficient and distributed spending patterns, with a significant portion allocated to tourism activities.
“With the increase in the number of travelers, total spending in the tourism sector rose from approximately IDR 11.04 trillion in 2025 to IDR 19.86 trillion in 2026. This reflects a shift from household-based consumption to experience-based consumption, particularly in tourism,” the Deputy Minister stated.
Overall, the rise in economic activity was driven by high mobility during both the outbound and return homecoming flows, as well as a growing tendency for family-oriented travel. This mobility boosted cross-sector consumption, particularly in transportation, culinary businesses, local MSMEs in destination areas, and accommodation.
“Thus, the Eid momentum is not only an annual social tradition, but also serves as one of the key engines driving the national economy, increasingly strengthening tourism as a catalyst for both regional and national economic growth,” she added.
The Ministry of Tourism also monitored tourist visits to 10 Priority Tourism Destinations (DPP) and 3 Regenerative Tourism Destinations (DPR).
During the Eid 2026 period, passenger movement to the 10 priority destinations reached 6.66 million, an increase of 13.74 percent compared to the 2025 Eid period (5.86 million). Meanwhile, the three regenerative destinations recorded 6.1 million movements, up 24.63 percent from 4.9 million in 2025.
“The highest increases were recorded in Raja Ampat, which grew by 19.9 percent among priority destinations, and the Riau Islands, which surged by 125.5 percent among regenerative destinations,” Ni Luh Puspa conveyed.
From these activities, total estimated public spending in priority and regenerative tourism destinations exceeded IDR 12.27 trillion, accounting for approximately 61.8 percent of total national tourism spending.
“Going forward, this momentum will continue to be leveraged to strengthen destination development, improve service quality, and promote more equitable economic growth through tourism across Indonesia,” she said.
