RRI.CO.ID, Wonosobo - The Eid al-Fitr holiday season in Wonosobo, Central Java, is once again enlivened by the 2026 Hot Air Balloon Festival, a colorful tradition that has become one of the region’s most anticipated attractions.
Every year, residents and visitors gather to watch dozens of balloons rise into the sky, marking the festive atmosphere of Lebaran.
The hot air balloon festival is part of the broader Festival Mudik(Exodus Festival), a cultural program designed to celebrate Indonesia’s annual homecoming tradition during Eid.
The Wonosobo Regency Administration, together with the Tourism and Culture Agency, organizes the series to highlight local heritage, promote tourism, and provide entertainment for returning families. The festival combines modern attractions with traditional elements, making it both a cultural showcase and a tourism draw.
The 2026 Exodus Festival runs from March 22 to 29, with hot air balloon flights scheduled at 23 different locations across Wonosobo.
Each day features launches in different villages, beginning at 6 a.m. local time, when the morning sky becomes a canvas for colorful balloons. The program culminates with a grand finale at Wonosobo Town Square on March 29, which also serves as the closing ceremony for the festival series.
Beyond the balloons, visitors can enjoy a traditional food bazaar, MSME exhibitions, music performances, and local arts, making the festival a comprehensive cultural experience.
Locations such as Gemblengan Garung, Lumajang Watumalang, Wonolelo, Butuh Kalikajar, and Sukoharjo host balloon flights on specific dates, while other villages, such as Simbang, Candiyasan, and Lamuk, extend the festivities over several days.
The spread of events across multiple sites allows different communities to participate while giving tourists a chance to explore Wonosobo’s diverse cultural landscape.
The Exodus Festival itself reflects the cultural significance of mudik, the annual mass homecoming of Indonesians during Eid, when millions travel back to their hometowns.
By combining the hot air balloon tradition with bazaars, exhibitions, and performances, Wonosobo has turned this cultural moment into a regional celebration that strengthens community ties and attracts visitors from across Indonesia.
Authorities have advised visitors to plan their trips carefully, as high tourist interest may cause congestion at several locations. Weather conditions, particularly rain, should also be taken into account. With proper preparation, the festival offers a comfortable and memorable holiday experience for families and tourists alike.
