Not Just Bali, Indonesia Prioritizes 10 New Destinations for Tourism

RRI.CO.ID, Berlin – The Indonesian government has reaffirmed its commitment to developing tourist destinations beyond Bali by prioritizing ten superhub destinations. Tourism Minister, Widiyanti Putri Wardhana, made the statement at the UN Tourism Ministers' Summit, part of the ITB Berlin 2026 series, which took place from 3-5 March 2026 in Berlin, Germany.

At the forum, Widiyanti emphasized that investment is a key factor in unlocking and maximizing tourism potential in various regions in Indonesia. According to her, developing new destinations requires robust investment support to compete in the global tourism market.

"Tourism investment in Indonesia is a key catalyst that unlocks destination potential. We have a very well-known destination, Bali. However, since 2016, we have developed 10 new destinations other than Bali," she said at the forum.

She explained that the ten priority destinations being developed by the government include Lake Toba, Tanjung Kelayang, the Thousand Islands, Borobudur, Bromo-Tengger-Semeru, Mandalika, Labuan Bajo, Wakatobi, and Morotai. The development of these destinations is expected to expand national tourism growth poles.

Minister Widiyanti also revealed that tourism investment remains concentrated in Bali and Java. More than 70 percent of tourism investment is directed toward these two regions, with around 42 percent concentrated in Bali and Jakarta alone.

"More than 70% of investment was directed to Bali and Java Island, and 42% is concentrated in Bali and Jakarta alone. Therefore, our priority is to channel sufficient investment in the 10 priority destinations other than Bali," she said.

To encourage equitable investment, the Ministry of Tourism has established ten tourism Special Economic Zones (SEZs). Through this scheme, investors can obtain various incentives such as tax allowances, import duty exemptions, super tax deductions, and tax holidays for corporate income tax.
