RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Minister of Religious Affairs, Nasaruddin Umar, has stated that the Istiqlal Mosque is now globally recognized as a premier model for mosque construction. This international acclaim stems from the mosque's consistent annual innovations, particularly in its optimization of modern and sustainable building management systems.

Furthermore, the mosque has received formal appreciation from the United Nations in New York, which highlighted Istiqlal as a benchmark for mosque development projects across Africa. Minister Nasaruddin Umar confirmed this achievement during a press conference held at the Istiqlal Mosque in Jakarta on Wednesday, 18 February 2026.

“Yes, for your information, ladies and gentlemen, we were invited to New York to the United Nations. We were received directly by the Director of Intercultural Affairs there and the secretary. And we believe that the Istiqlal Mosque will become a model for mosque construction in Africa,” he said.

Beyond its architectural renown, the Istiqlal Mosque continues to introduce new innovations every year. Nasaruddin highlighted the mosque's international accolades, including an award from the World Bank for being the best-managed, cleanest, and most efficient facility. This achievement notably surpassed the sustainable management standards of famous skyscrapers in Dubai and Qatar.

Nasaruddin stated, “Last year, we received an International Award from the World Bank in Washington, D.C. as the cleanest, most efficient, effective, and best-managed mosque among all buildings, not only places of prayer, but even skyscrapers.”

The technical excellence cited in the award includes the installation of solar panels on the mosque's roof for energy efficiency, along with a highly effective water recycling system. Nasaruddin explained that at the Istiqlal Mosque, wastewater is treated in large storage tanks until it meets purified standards suitable for drinking.

Furthermore, Istiqlal has evolved into an inclusive social hub, featuring fitness centers, interfaith sports facilities, and affordable lodging for travelers. These community-focused amenities are supported by a rigorous commitment to accessibility, ensuring that people with disabilities have equal and comfortable access to all areas of the mosque.
