KBRN, Loksado: The Meratus Mountains in South Kalimantan offer a visual feast of lush tropical rainforest and the clear, winding Amandit River that cuts through Loksado Subdistrict in Hulu Sungai Selatan Regency.
Amid this natural splendor lies Riam Hanai Waterfall, a tranquil and captivating destination tucked away in Lok Lahung Village. The site is located near the Malaris Traditional Hall, where the Dayak Loksado community holds Aruh Ganal, a ceremonial thanksgiving for the rice harvest.
Visitors can reach the waterfall on foot from the hall, following a shaded trail lined with trees. Parts of the path are made of natural stone, adding a touch of adventure for nature lovers.
The sound of trickling water and birdsong accompanies each step, offering a soothing soundtrack for those seeking connection with the outdoors.
During the rainy season, the trail can become slippery, and visitors are advised to proceed with caution. Yet it is precisely during this time that Riam Hanai reaches its most dramatic flow, with mist rising from the falls in a mesmerizing display.
Not far from the waterfall, simple accommodations are available in the form of tourist tents pitched along a tributary that flows directly from Riam Hanai. The gentle sound of water throughout the night creates a calming atmosphere for overnight guests.
While the facilities are modest, they are clean, comfortable, and affordable. Ideal for travelers who want to immerse themselves in nature without spending much.
Rika Amalia, a visitor from Banjarbaru, said she was enchanted by the serenity of the site. “I’ve been to Loksado several times, but this was my first time at Riam Hanai. It’s truly beautiful and untouched. The sound of the waterfall and the cool air make me feel at home, especially staying in a tent by the river. It feels like returning to nature,” she said with a smile on Friday, October 31, 2025.
Yusuf Maulana, a visitor from Banjarmasin, shared that sleeping in a tent was the highlight of his trip. “Listening to the sound of water and insects at night was incredible. The tents were clean, comfortable, and affordable. In the morning, you can bathe in the river. The water is so cool and refreshing,” he said enthusiastically.
The beauty of Riam Hanai and the surrounding Meratus landscape reminds us that Indonesia’s true charm isn’t always found in big cities or luxury resorts. It lives among the trees, along riverbanks, and in communities that honor their natural heritage.
Protecting and cherishing natural destinations like Loksado means preserving the soul of the archipelago, ensuring it remains pristine, sustainable, and accessible for generations to come. (Misni Parjiati/Ed. Lasti Martina)
