Lawang Surya Kencana a Historic and Cultural Icon in Bogor

KBRN, Bogor: Lawang Surya Kencana stands as a significant historical and cultural icon in Bogor, West Java. Located in the Surya Kencana area, the gate is not just an entrance to the city's economic hub but also a silent witness to its long history since the colonial era.

Known as the gate to Bogor’s oldest Chinatown, Lawang Surya Kencana was first built during the Dutch East Indies government to mark the boundary of the Chinese trading district. Its name comes from Lawang, which means door in Javanese, and Surya Kencana, the name of the main street in the area.

Today, Lawang Surya Kencana is the starting point for visitors exploring the rows of shops, legendary restaurants, and ancient buildings that still stand along Jalan Surya Kencana. The area is also famous as a legendary culinary center, with traditional Bogor snacks like tauge goreng, asinan, and doclang still being sold today.

According to Head of the Bogor City Culture and Tourism Office, Firdaus, Lawang Surya Kencana functions not only as a tourist gateway but also as a symbol of diversity and harmony.

"Here we can see how local and Chinese cultures have blended for hundreds of years and formed the city's identity," he said on Friday, September 26, 2025.

The Bogor City Administration is currently working on revitalizing the Surya Kencana area, including maintaining Lawang Surya Kencana as a cultural heritage site. The hope is that this historical landmark will continue to be a popular tourist attraction and a vibrant economic space for the local community.
