KBRN, Jakarta: In a spirited celebration of its 499th anniversary, the administration of Banjarmasin City, South Kalimantan, is reaffirming its commitment to preserving its centuries-old river culture by hosting the traditional jukung (canoe) race along the Martapura River. The event, known as the Jukung Balap Baanam Wali Kota Cup, is more than a competition. It’s a cultural statement.
“This is not just a race. It’s a shared effort to preserve our river traditions. The jukung is more than a means of transport. It’s a symbol of Banjar life,” said Banjarmasin Mayor Muhammad Yamin HR on Sunday, September 7, 2025, as quoted by antaranews.com.
The mayor emphasized that the jukung has long been integral to the daily lives of Banjarmasin residents, serving both practical and cultural roles. The tradition of racing these boats has historically been a source of entertainment and community bonding.
This year’s race drew enthusiastic participation, with 64 contestants representing various neighborhoods across the city. Spectators lined the riverbanks, some even renting river cruise boats to get a closer view of the action.
“The public’s excitement was overwhelming. Many went out of their way to witness the race firsthand,” Yamin added, expressing hope that future events will be even more festive to ensure the tradition endures.
The city administration continues to position Martapura River as a hub for cultural and recreational activities. Events like the jukung race not only strengthen Banjarmasin’s identity as the “City of a Thousand Rivers” but also enhance its appeal as a tourism destination.
Among Banjarmasin’s river-based attractions are scenic boat tours along Martapura River, showcasing riverside homes and daily life, as well as the iconic floating markets in Kuin and Siring. These experiences collectively draw an estimated 6,000 visitors each week. ***
