KBRN, Jakarta: Indonesia is home to many historic hotels that offer not only comfort, but also architectural beauty and rich stories. These establishments have witnessed the nation’s journey, from the struggle for independence to the growth of its tourism industry.
More than just places to stay, these hotels are national landmarks that reflect pride and heritage. Here are five historic hotels that combine luxury accommodation with significant chapters in Indonesia’s history:
1. Hotel Indonesia Kempinski – Jakarta

Opened in 1962 by President Soekarno, Hotel Indonesia Kempinski was the country’s first five-star hotel. According to Kempinski Hotel's website, it was envisioned as a symbol of national pride.
President Soekarno worked closely with architect Abel Sorensen to realize this ambitious project in just two years. The hotel hosted dignitaries during the 4th Asian Games and remains a key part of Indonesia’s modern history.
2. Hotel Majapahit – Surabaya
Hotel Majapahit Surabaya stands proudly with its grand colonial architecture, a heritage icon of the city.Built in 1910 by the Sarkies brothers, Hotel Majapahit holds a special place in Indonesia’s independence story. According to the Surabaya’s Agency for Culture and Tourism, the hotel was the site of a pivotal moment during Indonesia's struggle for independence.
On September 19, 1945, Indonesian youth tore down the Dutch flag from its rooftop, an act of defiance that led to the death of Mr. Ploegman and became a symbol of resistance.
3. Royal Ambarrukmo Hotel – Yogyakarta

4. Hotel Tjampuhan & Spa – Ubud, Bali

Its collection of traditional-style bungalows and serene setting pays homage to Ubud’s artistic legacy, making it a sanctuary for cultural appreciation.
5. Hotel Pelangi – Malang
