KBRN, Padang: The Mentawai Islands Regency Administration in West Sumatra Province will assume direct management of surfing spots within its jurisdiction.

This action responds to the prevalence of unscrupulous surfing tourism operators who bring foreign visitors without fulfilling their tax obligations (surfing tax).

This was conveyed by Mentawai Islands Regent Rinto Wardana Samaloisa during an interview with RRI Padang on Sunday, May 11, 2025.

He highlighted that various prime surfing areas in Mentawai waters are still under the influence of specific individuals, leading to significant losses in potential tax revenue.

"Therefore, we will work on harmonizing the Tourism Regulation," he said as quoted by rri.co.id.

One key measure will be implementing a surfing tax for foreign tourists, with rates ranging from IDR 500,000 (approximately USD 30) to IDR 2 million (approximately USD 121), adjusted based on duration and surfing location.

Rinto clarified that not every foreign visitor comes to surf. "It would be unfair to impose taxes on those who do not participate in surfing," he noted.

Rinto said that the Regency Administration is taking tourism management in the Mentawai Islands seriously. This follows reports from local residents regarding the widespread issue of dishonest surfing tourism operators who neglect to remit fees to the administration.

He urged all tourism service providers to comply with their payment obligations to support regional tourism development.

Another concern being addressed is tourists who engage in surfing without the required permits.

To preempt this, the Mentawai Islands Regency Administration intends to designate established surfing areas as exclusive zones, requiring proper authorization.

Previously, Rinto had reportedly warned cruise ship personnel transporting foreign visitors to surf in the waters near Sinaka Village.

He emphasized receiving numerous complaints from locals about the proliferation of surfing tourism operators who evade paying the mandated fees to the Regency Administration.

The Mentawai Islands are globally renowned for their stunning ocean waves, making them a top destination for surfing enthusiasts.

One of the most prominent surfing locations in North Sipora boasts some of the best waves in the Mentawai Islands. It offers a variety of left and right breaks suitable for surfers of all skill levels.
