Surge in Mt. Ijen Climbers Drawn by 'Blue Flame' Phenomenon

KBRN, Bondowoso: The number of climbers on Mt. Ijen, Bondowoso, East Java, surged during the 2025 Eid holiday to witness the iconic blue flame phenomenon within the volcano's crater.
Sigit Hari Wibowo, head of the Ijen Crater Nature Park Resort (KSDA) explained this on Saturday, April 5, 2025. “On the fourth day of Eid there were around 1200 visitors, generally from outside Banyuwangi and Bondowoso, East Java,” said Hari Wibowo as quoted by rri.co.id.
This number represents a dramatic increase compared to the Eid celebration on March 31, 2025, when only 200 climbers were recorded.
“On the second Eid, it increased to 480, the third Eid 680 and on the fourth day around 1200 visitors,” he said.
Ijen Volcano's primary attraction is the Blue Flame phenomenon. This unique spectacle originates from the volcano's active crater.

Ijen Volcano is situated on the border of Bondowoso, Situbondo, and Banyuwangi Regencies. Access to Mt. Ijen for climbing is typically via Banyuwangi.
The climbers' visit continues to positively impact the local economy by boosting tourism revenue. Nevertheless, it remains crucial to remind visitors to prioritize cleanliness and environmental sustainability at this site.
Hari Wibowo said that on the fifth day of the Eid holiday, the management closed the area for the routine 'Ijen Rijig' activities. These activities, which involve cleaning the Ijen Volcano area, to protect the environment, is conducted monthly during the first week of Friday.
He said that the high enthusiasm of climbers is because now the blue fire can be enjoyed again. However, the climbers should adhere to the applicable rules and prioritize safety during their travels.
On July 12, 2024, Ijen Crater's alert level was raised from normal. A circular issued by the Geological Agency of the Energy and Mineral Resources Ministry prohibited tourists and sulfur miners from approaching the crater rim within a 1.5 km radius. ***
