KBRN, Biak: Do you love adventures in nature? Has it ever crossed your mind to see the splendor of a waterfall with a height of hundreds of meters in the middle of hidden green nature?
Indeed, the wonders of Indonesia's nature will never end. One of those wonders is in North Sumatra, Ponot Waterfall. As reported by rri.co.id, this waterfall is crowned as the highest waterfall in Indonesia with a height of 250 meters.
Besides being so tall, this waterfall also offers a fresh and calming natural atmosphere, as if inviting to dissolve in harmony. Ponot Waterfall is in Tangga Village, Aek Songsongan Subdistrict, Asahan Regency, North Sumatra Province.
As the pride of the locals, the waterfall consists of three tiers of water flowing rapidly from a steep cliff. This waterfall is one of the most popular waterfalls in North Sumatra, apart from Sigura-gura and Sipiso-piso waterfalls.
They are all fed by the creeks of the Asahan River, which is also the main source of the Asahan Hydro Electric Power Plant (PLTA).
Unlike other waterfalls, Ponot offers more than just a view. When the water flow is high, visitors will be greeted with a light mist flying around the waterfall making the air feel cooler and fresher.
What makes Ponot even more special is the powerful roar of the water as it falls on the rocks below. You will hear this sound even before arriving at the main point of the waterfall.
The thin mist that envelops the area also adds a special impression, depending on the morning or when it rains.
Swimming is not recommended for visitors to the waterfall pool because the flow is strong and the rocks around the pool are quite slippery. So, visitors need to be extra careful when stepping.
Even so, the atmosphere here is perfect for sitting back and relaxing while enjoying the splashing water and the soothing sounds of nature.
A trip to Ponot Waterfall is like an adventure that takes visitors to a pristine wilderness. When visiting here, visitors will see the Ponot River flowing between green hills at about 500 meters above sea level. The river also forms small rivers around the waterfall pool, adding beauty to every corner.
Access to Ponot Waterfall starts with a trip from Medan, the capital of North Sumatra Province with a travel time of about 6 hours. It is quite long, but this trip will not feel boring at all because along the road, visitors will be treated to Sumatra's natural scenery that spoils the eyes, ranging from tropical forests, and mountains, to Lake Toba which never fails to make anyone fall in love.
Porsea City in Toba Regency is the closest point to this waterfall, apart from Pematang Siantar and Rantau Prapat.
There is a large gate that signifies that this waterfall is getting close. From here, the trip continues on foot for about 500 meters along a concrete path that goes uphill a little.
On the walk to the waterfall pool, visitors will pass tributaries with clear water and large natural stones around them. It feels like entering another world far from the bustling city.
Near its end, the trail ends with large, slightly slippery rocks, which are the highest point before seeing Ponot Waterfall in full view.
Although it takes quite a bit of effort to reach this location, it will be worth it for the incredible views and fresh air that can be found in natural places like this. How about it? Are you interested and willing to travel to see the majestic Ponot Waterfall? ***
