RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta – Member of Indonesia's House of Representatives (DPR) Habib Aboe Bakar emphasized that the development of artificial intelligence (AI) has brought major changes to the legal profession. According to him, lawyers must not only understand technology but also use it while upholding legal principles, professional ethics, human rights protections, and their responsibility to society.
Habib said he views AI development from two perspectives. Those views are from the perspective of national legal development and law enforcement, and from the perspective of Indonesia’s readiness to help establish AI governance at the global level.
“The more important question is: Is our legal profession ready to harness AI without losing sight of legal principles, professional ethics, human rights protections, and our responsibility to society?” Habib asked, as quoted by the DPR website on Saturday, August 29, 2026.
According to Habib, AI development must fit within a legal and law enforcement system capable of addressing the challenges of the times. AI has significant potential to assist legal work, but the nature of the legal field means that its use requires caution.
“AI technology has great potential to help achieve these goals. However, we must also understand that law has characteristics that distinguish it from other fields. In law, decisions can affect a person’s freedom, rights, property, reputation, and even their future,” he explained.
In the context of the legal profession, Habib said AI would fundamentally change the value of lawyers. The emergence of AI means that they need to develop new skills to offer clients more effective and valuable legal solutions.
“In the context of the legal profession, this change is bringing us toward a major transformation—from lawyers as information providers to lawyers as solution providers,” he said.
Furthermore, Habib Aboe Bakar said the challenges posed by AI are not limited to individuals’ ability to operate the technology. In his view, AI development must be accompanied by readiness across the entire ecosystem.
“The development of AI must be accompanied by ecosystem readiness, ranging from infrastructure, data, human resources, and industry to governance and regulation,” he said.
Habib – of the Prosperous Justice Party (PKS) – said this need is particularly important in the legal profession because AI potentially affects almost every stage of a lawyer’s work. Therefore, he called on lawyers, academics, legal practitioners, law students, and members of the broader legal community to view the AI transformation not merely as a threat to the profession, but as an opportunity to improve the quality of the legal profession and Indonesia’s national legal system.
“We must see the AI transformation as an opportunity to build a better legal profession and legal system in Indonesia,” Habib Aboe Bakar said.
Habib added that Indonesia needs a law enforcement system that is increasingly modern, professional, transparent, and adaptable to technological developments. He emphasized the importance of Indonesia’s role in ensuring technological progress goes hand in hand with the protection of the public interest.
