RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia's National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) has unveiled six water technologies to enhance national water security amid climate change. The technologies were presented in Jakarta on Thursday, 23 July 2026.
The innovations are designed to secure access to water for communities, agriculture, industries, and disaster management. BRIN said the solutions address various stages of the hydrological cycle, from the atmosphere to coastal and marine areas.
Head of BRIN, Arif Satria, said climate change has increased risks of drought, floods, and uncertain water distribution in Indonesia. He emphasized that water management requires research-based solutions beyond traditional infrastructure.
Arif highlighted that BRIN’s technologies combine scientific research with practical applications. The solutions include weather modification, groundwater exploration, nuclear technology, seawater desalination, water treatment systems, and rainwater harvesting.
He explained that Indonesia needs independent water management capabilities to meet future challenges. Arif delivered a statement about the importance of making the most of available water source through science and innovation.
"The sustainability of our civilization depends on independence in managing water. The technologies introduced by BRIN translate basic science into practical applications to ensure every drop of water, whether from clouds, rock crevices, or oceans, can be optimized for public welfare. This is a real manifestation of Resilient Indonesia in Water toward Golden Indonesia 2045,” he said.
Among the technologies, BRIN developed weather modification technology to induce rainfall through cloud seeding. The agency also explores underground karst rivers and offshore freshwater reservoirs as future strategic water sources.
BRIN also develops seawater desalination using reverse osmosis and environmentally friendly membrane technology. Other innovations include ARSINUM drinking water systems, mobile emergency water-treatment units, and rainwater harvesting systems.
