Key Points
- Plastic waste is being converted into industrial-scale fuel under BRIN’s pyrolysis system to reduce fishermen’s reliance on diesel and support energy independence.
- BRIN is expanding waste-to-energy innovation already applied in Mataram, Lombok, while urging global collaboration to accelerate SDGs goals by 2030.
RRI.CO.ID, Jakarta - Indonesia’s push for energy independence is taking shape at sea, where plastic waste is being transformed into fuel for fishermen. The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is developing an advanced pyrolysis system designed to convert discarded plastics into liquid fuel, offering a sustainable alternative to diesel.
BRIN Head Arif Satria introduced the innovation during the International Conference on Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), held as part of the 72nd anniversary of Universitas Muslim Indonesia (UMI) in Makassar on Monday, June 8, 2026.
He explained that the technology, formally named Liquid Fuel from Plastic Waste with Advanced Pyrolysis System for Industrial Scale, was created to provide affordable energy for fishing communities.
“Plastic waste often has no value, but BRIN is turning this low-value material into fuel for fishermen,” Arif said. He added that continued conversion of plastic into energy could reduce dependence on diesel and strengthen energy self-sufficiency.
Arif noted that opportunities in the energy sector remain vast, spanning both simple and advanced technologies. He pointed to BRIN’s high-level waste management systems already applied in Mataram, Lombok, as examples of scalable innovation.
The conference, attended by researchers from various countries, also underscored the role of science in achieving the UN’s Sustainable Development Goals by 2030. Arif emphasized that research must deliver practical solutions to pressing global challenges.
“It is a global commitment that our steps must be based on strong evidence and data, ensuring accountability in everything we do,” he said.
By linking waste management with energy needs, BRIN’s initiative not only addresses plastic pollution but also supports livelihoods, marking a step toward circular economy practices and sustainable development in Indonesia. ***
