RRI.CO.ID, Bandung - The National Research and Innovation Agency (BRIN) is promoting the use of artificial intelligence (AI) to foster food safety. This aimed at responding to the ongoing concerns over food fraud and hazardous substances in consumer products.
A Researcher of BRIN’s Research Center for Artificial Intelligence and Cyber Security, Agustami Sitorus, said modern technology is needed to address increasingly complex food fraud practices. The food fraud includes adulteration, ingredient substitution, and product mislabeling.
"This issue requires a technological approach that is able to identify the quality and originality of a product objectively and quickly," he said as quoted by BRIN's website on Thursday, May 28, 2026.
According to him, technological advances now allow food products to be evaluated through non-destructive methods without opening or damaging packaging. The approach combines smart sensors, spectroscopy, image processing, AI, and machine learning to assess product quality and authenticity more efficiently.
He explained that multimodal sensors can combine multiple sensing methods to provide more comprehensive product evaluations. Meanwhile IoT systems enable continuous monitoring across the food supply chain.
Agustami added that hyperspectral imaging technology can help detect defects and contamination that are not visible to the naked eye. Then, nanomaterial-based sensors are considered capable of improving contamination detection because of their high sensitivity.
The BRIN researcher further explained that the integration of AI, machine learning, IoT, advanced imaging, and nanotechnology could support the development of a more modern and reliable food inspection system. He also sees the technology as a future research opportunity to improve the quality and integrity of Indonesia’s agricultural and food products
